How would you read a Hull ID Number?
The Hull Identification Amount (HIN) is really a 12- or fourteen-character serial range that uniquely identifies a boat. The HIN is analogous to your VIN on a vehicle.
The 1st 3 digits are the Manufacturer’s Identification Code (ex. Boat brand for example Sea Ray, Meridian, and many others.). The 4 digits after that are classified as the maker’s serial range to the boat. The third and 4th digits within the end are the day of manufacture. The letter about the date from the manufacture corresponds to the thirty day period in the yr, i.e. A = January, B = February, C = March and so on. The final two digits on the HIN amount hull id number signify the product yr.
All boats manufactured or imported on or following November one, 1972, have to bear a HIN, and this HIN needs to be determined during boat registration. Vessels created or imported ahead of 1972 are EXEMPT simply because they often don't have a HIN.
The HIN is discovered on a steel or plastic plate, ordinarily about the transom from the boat, normally on the proper starboard (ideal) side with the transom within two inches of the top of transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is most affordable.
On vessels without transoms, or impractical to implement transoms, the HIN is normally affixed on the starboard (right) outboard facet of hull, aft, inside a person foot of the stern and within two inches of the top of the hull facet, gunwale or hull/deck joint, whichever is least expensive.
